London Boutique Hotels

A Boutique Hotel is usually small, intimate hotels that provides a very personalized service. The hotels are generally unique in both style and decoration. Often a boutique hotel is based upon a theme, scheme, or idea. An example of this could be a chocolate themed hotel where the decoration would be chocolate and cream with chocolate treats and cuisine. If you wanted to take this theme to extremes you could have each individual room themed upon a particular chocolate.

The First Boutique Hotel

The term "boutique hotel" first entered the English language in in New York in 1984 when Steven Rubell, who first coined the phrase in reference to his 'Morgans' hotel. Morgan's opened on Madison Avenue, Murray Hill, New York and Rubell used the term to show how radically different his hotel was from the mundane "department store" hotels owned by the big brand hotel chains.

Rubell, who along with the entrepreneur Ian Schrager, commissioned parisian designer Andrée Putman. Putman devised an overall theme and style for the hotel which could be described as "America meets Europe" taking unique aspects from both to create something wonderfully unique. The key was to ensure that all of the main characteristics oozed independence and originality. In doing so he helped design, arguably, the worlds first boutique hotel.

I have seen several writers dispute the above facts, saying that, the first boutique hotels were actually opened in 1981. These being The Blakes Hotel in South Kensington, London (designed by celebrity stylist Anouska Hempel) and the Bedford in Union Square, San Francisco (the first in a series of 34 boutique hotels currently operated under the flag of one of the most eminent players in the boutique hotel world today, the Kimpton Group).

However, as it was Rubell who coined the phrase, and only did so in 1984, these two hotels in effect only became boutique hotels when he created the classification. Therefore the very first hotel to be called a "boutique hotel" was Rubell and Schragers Morgans hotel. Yes other hotels which we now call boutique hotels were built prior to theirs but truly Morgans can rightfully claim to be the first.

Other Boutique Hotels

The first UK boutique hotel was 42 The Calls in Leeds. This was originally and old corn mill and still maintains some of the original machinery as well as luxurious handmade beds. The first London boutique hotel was The Blake's Hotel in South Kensington (as mentioned in previous paragraph). In fact over the years London has seen increasing numbers of these chic and trendy hotels across the city.

London is a very diverse city, considered by most to be very cosmopolitan. While the cultures, races, creeds and colors are incredibly diverse it is also true that the hundreds of London hotels are almost as diverse in their designs and themes, this being most evident in the broad range of boutique hotels. If you are planning to visit London soon why not consider booking a room in one of the wonderful boutique hotels in London.
